ARTIST STATEMENT

My work consists of the context of Malay custom culture in the marriage ceremony. I like to acknowledge the customary marriage of Malay brides that is unexplained in today’s society by focusing on the bride’s facial expressions. The concept developed when I came across one of the Malay bride’s pictures in my grandmother’s old album. The bride’s facial expression was firm and still. I form my viewpoint and judgment toward the bride’s feelings based on her expression. My grandma explained in the old day’s the brides were forbidden to display their happiness and cheerful expression. They believe this is a symbol of modesty. I would like to re -celebrate the value of the traditional Malay custom belief as a practice of modesty and elegance. I have formed a Malay figurative naïve character to raise the characteristic of Malay woman culture. I experimented with a traditional art medium merged with a multi-platform of applications, tools, merged and collaged digitally to compose a new series of contemporary media.
